Backup Policy Guidelines
To ensure that Backups work correctly and efficiently, it is important to follow the below guidelines when planning your backup strategy.
Windows 2012 & 2008R2 (CIFS & Standard Backup Agent)
- Maximum Policy Size: 1TB
- Maximum Data Protected Per Server: 7TB
Windows 2008 & 2003 64bit
- Maximum Policy Size: 1TB
- Maximum Data Protected Per Server: 5TB
Windows 2008 & 2003 32bit
- Maximum Policy Size: 1TB
- Maximum Data Protected Per Server: 2TB
If there is more data on a backup policy than the network connection could transfer in 4 or 5 days, then the policy should be broken up into smaller backup policies that can be sent offsite within that time.
If multiple policies must be created because of bandwidth, CloudRecover recommends that you review the data and exclude files that do not need to be backed up.
For example, exclude the following file types from backup:
- Thumbs.db files. Generally these are temporary files.
- ~*.* files. Generally these are temporary files.
- Non-critical photographs, movies and others.
- Non-critical files protected by another backup method.
- Backup files generated by other products or applications including SQL Backups, LiveVault may see these Backups as new files at each backup, if these files are large, this can consume the available network connection and may prevent the backup from replicating offsite
Multiple backup products used on the same server. If multiple backup products are used, ensure that the schedules will never overlap.
